Portwise at TOC Europe 2025
Portwise will be present at TOC Europe 2025, contributing to the conversation on the future of port operations through both the main conference programme and the Safety Village Pavilion. With decades of international experience in terminal simulation, automation, and electrification, Portwise continues to support ports and terminals worldwide in building smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable operations.
Session: Yvo Saanen on Intent-Driven Optimisation – Rethinking Efficiency, Scalability, and Results
We were promised fully autonomous operations and self-optimising systems that would transform terminal efficiency. Instead, many operations are still reliant on rigid, rule-based automation and high levels of human oversight.
In this high-level panel, our Managing Director Yvo Saanen joins fellow industry experts to examine why traditional digitalisation approaches often fall short—and what’s needed to truly move the needle.
The session introduces a new paradigm: Intent-Driven Systems or Objective-Oriented Operating (3-O) Systems. These models shift focus from process adherence to outcome achievement—enabling terminals to make real-time trade-offs, resolve conflicting KPIs, and operate with greater clarity and control.
Expect a clear-eyed discussion on:
- Why legacy rule-based systems limit agility and strategic alignment
- How 3-O Systems enable outcome-driven optimisation in live terminal environments
- Real-world examples of smarter, more adaptive operations
Portwise will contribute its expertise in simulation, intelligent design, and futureproof planning to this timely and forward-looking dialogue. Join us to explore how the next wave of digital transformation can deliver resilient, data-informed terminal performance.
Date and time: Tuesday 17 June, 14:45 – 15:30 | Location: TECH stage
Pavilion Talk: A Behavioural Approach to Safety Culture
Dr. Isabelle van Schilt, Principal Consultant at Portwise, will join the TOC Safety Village Pavilion to explore how psychological and behavioural approaches can strengthen safety culture across ports and terminals.
Drawing on in sights from Harvard Professor Amy Edmondson, the session will examine the importance of psychological safety—where frontline staff feel empowered to speak up—as a foundation for effective risk identification and continuous improvement. Rather than relying solely on protocols and equipment, a behavioural approach helps internalise safe practices, ultimately improving safety performance across operations.
Key questions to be explored include:
- How does human perception influence safety performance?
- What role does psychological safety play in identifying risks?
- How can data and simulation support behaviour-based training?
Date and time: Tuesday 17 June, 12:00–13:00 | Location: Safety Village, TOC Europe
