Portwise joins TOC Americas 2026
Increasing container throughput does not always require additional equipment or terminal expansion. But how can operators identify opportunities to improve performance within their existing infrastructure? At TOC Americas 2026, Portwise’s Regional Director for the Americas, Guilherme Soares de Sa Peixoto, will moderate a discussion exploring this challenge.
From 20 to 22 October, port and terminal professionals will gather in Cartagena, Colombia, for TOC Americas 2026 to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the container supply chain. On Wednesday, 21 October, Guilherme will moderate the TECH TOC session “Optimizing Container Handling to Maximize Terminal Performance and Throughput”.
Getting more from existing terminal infrastructure
Container terminals across the Americas face increasing pressure to improve productivity, reduce operating costs and maintain reliable service levels. However, expanding terminal infrastructure or investing in additional equipment is not always the most practical or cost-effective solution.
Before investing in additional capacity, terminal operators need to understand how efficiently their existing infrastructure, equipment and operational processes are being used.
Where are the actual bottlenecks? Could alternative equipment deployment, improved yard strategies or changes to operational workflows increase throughput? And how can operators evaluate these possibilities before making investment decisions?
The role of simulation, digital twins and AI
Advances in digital technologies offer new opportunities to better understand and improve terminal operations.
Simulation models and digital twins can help operators evaluate operational scenarios, identify bottlenecks and assess the potential impact of proposed improvements. AI and real-time operational data may support more informed planning and decision-making.
However, technology alone does not guarantee better terminal performance. Its value depends on the quality of the available data, integration with existing terminal operating systems and, ultimately, the operational decisions it supports.
At Portwise, we believe that improving terminal performance starts with understanding how the different parts of the terminal interact. By combining operational expertise with simulation, terminal operators can evaluate improvement opportunities and make informed decisions about capacity, productivity and investment.
